NATIONAL WORKSHOP 1 National SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme

The leadership of municipalities and regions is one of the most significant driving forces in the implementation of the SDGs, therefore this 1st National Workshop aimed to introduce roles and functions of IGES to local authorities and important stakeholders in implementing SDGs at ASEAN level.

This workshop is also a platform for local authorities and relevant stakeholders to discuss matters on methods and best practices in order to facilitate the execution of SDGs at local level. Equally important, this workshop also hope to find potential and promising candidates (local authorities) for SDGs-FC and Model Cities in the future.

This program intended to help cities in ASEAN to be dynamic, inclusive, as well as resilient, in accordance with the vision of ASEAN 2020. Since 2011 until 2017, ASEAN ESC Model cities had successfully supported and acknowledged 40 model cities through initiatives implementation and nature management policies that focuses on bottom up approach. Malaysia SDGs Report Report 2020

The Country Report on Cities and SDGs is the expected output of the ASEAN SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme (FC Programme) at national level.

The main objectives of the report are:

  1. to summarise good practices and challenges on SDG implementation atlocal level, which will be shared under the FC Programme (such throughthe National Workshops);
  2. to illustrate what kinds of national supports are provided to the FCcities/model cities in implementation of the Priority Action Plan and how thesupports help/improve actions taken by the FC cities/Model cities;
  3. to summarise the lessoned learned and how it can be shared/applied toother cities from the viewpoint of national governments

PLANMalaysia is appointed by Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) as the National Focal Point for ASEAN SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme in Malaysia. This report is jointly prepared by PLANMalaysia and PERSADA. PERSADA is the main vendor and consultant for the Programme in Malaysia. The content of this report has incorporated viewpoints and feedbacks from agencies at all levels of government (National, state and local), cities, NGOs, universities and communities
